21 Sept
We worked for 22 hours yesterday, but thankfully the advisor who believes that sleep is a sin has left the country. So Swaroop and I head for a little site seeing after getting up at the crack of noon. Sharmila doesn't feel like doing more walking than moving around out 10ftx10ft apt - she's also got the burden of paper writing.
Swaroop and I catch the metro to Ostia Antica - ancient harbor of the Romans. Here are some pics:
This is an urn for preserving the ashes of the dead in the remains of the cemetery as you enter the ancient town of Ostia Antica.
Swaroop ducking under a low door. We are still in the cemetery and the little holes in the wall were where more urns were stored.
Me in front of the ancient sign marking the entrance to the city; put up by Cicero during the time of Caesar.
Mosaics surrounding the Piazzale dell Corporazioni, a central public square where lots of trading took place. It is adjacent to an old theater.
Figures representing actors in plays at the theater.
Statue of a Roman at ease
With really big feet
Panorama of the commoner apts..
An example of the decaration put on temples.
Swaroop comparying himself to the Romans - a mosaic that adorns the floor of the aristocratic apts.
Enjoying gelato in the modern town of Ostia, right on the coast (the coast used to be further in land about 3km). Fortunately for me most fruit gelati is non-dairy and coco (coconut) gelato is the best!
